„Miejsce niczyje, bo niemieckie...”

Abstract

“Noones place, Germans’…” Church and Park of Peace in Jawor as an example of a site of commemoration (or oblivion)

The article deals with issues of cultural memory, memorial sites and grassroots initiatives to commemorate the historical events. The article focuses on the traces of evangelical communities which, due to ethnical and political reasons, were forced to leave town Jawor (situated in contemporary Lower Silesian Voivodeship) after the World War II. The author reconstructs the history and compares it to the recollections of present citizens and their attitudes towards the remainders. Basing on the attitudes towards the objects, buildings and spaces left by evangelical communities the author presents the grassroots initiatives aiming at the destruction of German traces and asks about the social forms of remembrance and oblivion.
