Teoria queer nie definiuje, ukazuje  jedynie płynność  i wieloznaczność  takich pojęć,  jak  seksualność  i  tożsamość. Henrietta Moore  twierdzi,  że  jeśli  kategorie  te  stają  się nieokreślone  i niejednoznaczne, wtedy miejsce uprzywilejowane zajmuje ciało. Czy w związku z tym można pokusić się o twierdzenie, że osoby  transseksualne  –  twierdząc,  że  urodziły się w niewłaściwym ciele – chcą  tak naprawdę wyjść poza to ciało, zapanować nad nim, nadając mu formę, którą same zdefiniują, wybiorą? Czy pragną zawieszenia pomiędzy płciami? A może chcą  być  ponad nimi,  albo wręcz  odwrotnie  – wpasować  się w  „męskość”/„kobiecość”  bezrefleksyjnie?  Jeśli  tak,  to  czy można  je  włączyć w teorię queer, skoro powracają do esencji? Czy też paradoksalnie stają się queerowe z samej racji tego, iż narodziły się w „niewłaściwym” ciele?

Abstract

Threshold People. Transgenderists, Transsexsuals, Transvestites

Social reality sets up norms and rules while at the same time forms barriers and borders. Members of the society continually negotiate norms, especially ones concerning sexuality, identity and gender. To show the process of transformation of the above mentioned concepts the article begins with a short history of their evolution, mainly in the anthropological context. It shows the attitude of cultural relativism, psychological essentialism, gender anthropology and queer theory towards the problem. The queer theory is essential here, as it shows fluctuation, ambiguity, or even indefiniteness of the sexual identities. It seems that body, being visible, became a “prison”. The only way to escape it, and at the same time to incorporate transsexual people to the society, is to change sex. That is why transsexuals can be compared to the people being at the liminal phase. They live on the margin, longing for sex change in order to be incorporated into the society, because being between or outside categories is difficult in everyday life. As it is not clear to which category transsexuals belong, an impulse arises to “adjust”, or incorporate them to the society, so they could leave the liminal phase. Postmodern theories of gender codes interference cannot be used to explain the phenomenon of transsexuals, as they want to adopt other sex. That is why they can be called threshold people.
