Abstract

Narcissist on-line. A critical study of software

The article presents a critical view on software. The main thesis demonstrated by the author is that the personalisation of the Web leads to the disposal of randomness and makes people become digital narcissists. All information found on the Web reflects the user’s preferences. This phenomenon is harmful not only to the individual, whose perspective narrows down, but also to democracy. However, the author claims that the problem is not the software itself. He remarks that software resembles the figure of Golem, which was created to serve both good and evil purposes. The conclusion is that the issue of software requires an effective and critical reflection rather than a simple judgement. The article should be perceived as an encouragement for further discussion.
