Przepowiednie kosmicznego awansu

O mitologii i popularyzacji lotu pozaziemskiego

Fragment

W książkach przewidujących dalszy rozwój nauki, wśród których te zawierające opisy podróży do gwiazd są szczególnie interesującym przypadkiem, łatwo o ujęcia utopijne, prometejskie.
(...)
Strategia popularyzatora nauki wymaga korzystania z symboli, analogii, metafory i innych zabiegów, przybliżających laikom tematykę kosmiczną. Fontenelle, Burdecki i inni mogli traktować odwołania do sfery duchowej lub do nieaktualnego modelu wszechświata w sposób instrumentalny, wyłącznie jako chwyt retoryczny mający przyciągnąć uwagę. Mógłby on stanowić jednocześnie zabieg dydaktyczny użyty w celu uzmysłowienia czytelnikowi doniosłości dotychczasowych odkryć i rysującej się perspektywy rozwoju.

Abstract

Prophecies of cosmic elevation. On the mythological debt incurred by extra-terrestrial flight popularisers

The article concerns the way in which old beliefs and new discoveries are intertwined in popular science books on going to the outer space. Popular science tends to use old images and parallels to appeal to the readers. The theme of outer space evokes many ancient and medieval associations. A combination of these two areas offers potential examples of being indebted to the out-of-date vision of the world’s structure. The author discusses the works of Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle, Feliks Burdecki, Arthur C. Clarke, and Ralph A. Smith, and he tries to understand to what extent could the pre-scientific vision of the world and the early cosmologies affect popular science.
